The unit itself is plastic but able to support the weight of my laptop with ease. Functionality is as you might expect with all inputs and outputs going thru one USB port. With a keyboard and mouse and 17"monitor it worked OK, with some slowdowns on heavy data passage. Still it is a clever concept. BTW, NEVER use wireless attachments. They appear to send a continuous stream of data..
